Vocational education leader TAFE Queensland drives scalable student engagement with essential data compliance using Kahoot!

Key Wins
Successful Kahoot! rollout: TAFE Queensland successfully launched its game-based learning project across all its Australian campuses, ensuring the secure governance of personal information for both teachers and students.
Increased collaboration among educators: Teachers at TAFE Queensland utilise Kahoot! as a collaborative platform to share content with various teams.
Positive impact on performance: A recent survey conducted with TAFE teachers revealed that 100 percent of them strongly agreed that Kahoot! has a positive effect on the performance of their students.
An empowered group of educators: Teachers at TAFE Queensland feel more empowered and supported after incorporating Kahoot! Into their teaching practices.

The challenge at TAFE Queensland

TAFE Queensland faced a common challenge shared by many higher education institutions: balancing consistent, scalable engagement with essential data and IP governance, as well as addressing everyday issues in higher education’s shift to digital content.

“We saw people using the free version, but we needed governance around security and IP. After reviewing the market, we selected Kahoot! for TAFE Queensland.”

Steve Ambrose, Team Leader

The classroom reality
Vocational Education and Training (VET) classes can be lengthy and have varied schedules, operating across the day and evening. Teachers need fast, low-friction ways to keep students engaged and turn revision into practice that sticks.

The Solution: From casual use…
Kahoot! was already an established and well-liked tool used in classrooms at TAFE Queensland. The ambition for scaling its usage was to build on this scattered adoption by making engaging learning moments part of everyday teaching. Not just a nice-to-have. Providing consistency across subjects so more learners could benefit more often, and teachers can utilize reporting across cohorts.

…To a systematic, secure set-up
TAFE Queensland implemented a central Kahoot! EDU license aligned to their needs as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) requirements and educator workflows.

The benefits

  • Protected collaboration for teachers: Teachers can share spaces and folders in Kahoot! to co-create, reuse, and standardise resources, reducing individual heavy lifting.
  • Feature unlock with light upskilling: Teachers were able to access all premium features of Kahoot! including question types and game modes to boost the learning experience of students in the classroom.
  • AI-assisted authoring: Teachers can implement rapid drafting of items aligned to assessment markers, facilitating their class materials.
  • Privacy-preserving analytics: Reports on Kahoot! are linked to LMS identifiers, allowing teachers to identify gaps while students maintain nicknames in-session.

“The licence gave us a protected space and real team collaboration, sharing content so one person isn’t doing all the heavy lifting.”

Tracy Fearn, Educator Lead

Accelerating teacher adoption

With a central Kahoot! EDU license educators quickly transitioned from using Kahoot! for quick wins, such as icebreakers and in-class revision, to structured delivery and assessment practices.

“Teachers start with quick quizzes and icebreakers, then move into full content delivery, slides, PowerPoint, and teaching directly within Kahoot!.”

Marcie Connor, Educator Lead

Ease of use: The key to successful implementation across staff members

An electrical trades Foundation Educator went from self-described “not techy” to producing 13 ready-to-teach kahoots within days of upskilling and using AI assistance.

The rapid creation of content material for class made it practical to embed weekly checks to understand the class better, boost energy in long blocks, and identify which concepts needed reinforcement immediately after class.

  • Build quickly: use AI to draft question sets aligned to unit outcomes, then edit in minutes.
  • Teach live: students join on their own device, respond in real time and discuss the explanation between questions.
  • Act on evidence: reports show which questions and concepts students struggled with, so the educator can reword, add a short recap or adjust pacing before the next class or cohort.

“Between questions, students ask why that was the answer. Those moments let me explain and close gaps.”

Supported by anonymized analytics

Kahoot! analytics have now become standard in TAFE Queensland training. Staff use reports to target support and improve assessments helping to:

  • Identify student and cohort gaps via LMS-linked IDs, with nickname privacy in sessions.
  • Track repeatedly missed questions across cohorts, reword, adjust delivery, or change item type, then re-measure.

Privacy-preserving ID mapping matters at scale because it supports targeted intervention without eroding student trust.

“If Question 7 keeps underperforming, we reword it, adjust delivery, or change the question type.”

Tracy Fearn, Educator Lead

Next steps

TAFE Queensland’s next phase is about sustaining impact at scale: short, single-feature enablement sessions, a community of practice to spread what works across faculties, and a simple item-analysis loop so improvements persist term to term. That program sits inside a broader corporate vision for future-focused education and digitally enabled, job-ready learners.

“From a corporate level, it was a strategic vision about future-focused education… learners are on the go on the phone and the laptop… Kahoot! fits that digital era and the convenience for our learners.”
