This is how Simon Hunt uses Kahoot! to prepare his students at Tottington Primary School to succeed at national tests in the UK

Simon Hunt is a primary school teacher at Tottington Primary School in Manchester, England. He embodies an innovative approach to learning, harnessing technology to enhance student engagement and developing what he calls  “camouflage learning” with his students, where learning is embedded within a playful and enjoyable experience. His use of Kahoot! transcends the role of a mere interactive quiz. Instead, he uses it as an essential resource that empowers him to ensure his students learn effectively, as he relies on the data and reports the platform provides him. This helps him to better assess his students and understand where the learning gaps are so he can reinforce concepts and knowledge.

Preparing the future generation of learners with Kahoot!

Mr. Hunt uses Kahoot! to prepare students for the national times tables test required by year four in England. Kahoot! helps him to prepare his students to pass the test by consistently testing students’ knowledge.

“As a primary school teacher, I prepare children for tests that allow just six seconds to answer each question. I use Kahoot as a fun and engaging way to help them get ready while also gathering useful data. For example, if 30 kids struggle with “six times seven,” I can focus on that in the next lesson to reinforce their six and seven times tables.”

Mr. Hunt identifies those who need extra support, using data from Kahoot! to tailor his approach and address specific challenges, ensuring every student has the confidence to succeed.

“When children engage with questions, they’re having fun while I gather valuable data. This information helps me identify which kids are struggling and which areas need more focus. Although I might think a child is doing well, the data revealed through tests can show otherwise, allowing for extra support outside of class. Ultimately, the kids enjoy the activity, but I gain insights that enhance my teaching moving forward.”

Mr. Hunt uses a cyclical approach to assess and address student weaknesses using Kahoot!. After setting an initial Kahoot!, he analyzes the results to identify specific areas where students are struggling. Over the following weeks, he focuses his lessons on those weak points, reinforcing the material and ensuring deeper understanding. After revisiting the same Kahoot! questions, Mr. Hunt compares the students’ performance to their initial responses, evaluating their progress. This method allows him to determine whether further focus is needed on the area or if it’s time to move on to different topics in the curriculum. Through this approach, he effectively tracks and adapts his teaching to ensure that his students master key concepts before progressing.

Using Kahoot! AI features for saving time and sparking teaching creativity

Mr. Hunt is a passionate advocate for the power of AI in education. He effectively utilizes Kahoot!’s AI features to streamline his teaching processes. The AI PDF to Kahoot! generator saves him countless hours of lesson preparation, allowing him to concentrate on what truly matters: his students.

“I’ve been using AI with Kahoot! and love it. They’ve integrated it in a fantastic way. For our geography unit on volcanoes, I compiled the skills we want students to learn into a PDF. By uploading it to Kahoot!’s AI feature, it generates questions for me, saving a lot of time and effort.”

Additionally, when Simon experiences fatigue or brain fog, he relies on AI for inspiration, enabling him to present content in fresh and innovative ways that engage his students. Each piece of generated content is carefully reviewed and refined to meet the specific needs of his classroom.

“I’m using AI sometimes when I’ve had a long day and I’ve come home and I’ve got to produce 20 questions on something. I get brain fog sometimes. I happens to everyone. I start, but by dropping things into AI, by even asking AI questions, you’ve got a base to use, and then you can change and edit and improve and move questions around, omit questions, add some more questions, etc.”

Nurturing class discussion, inclusivity, and critical thinking with Kahoot!

Simon believes that the use of Kahoot! in the classroom nurtures critical thinking and inclusivity. He sparks open-ended conversations, prompting students to ask, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” This simple inquiry encourages students to share their thoughts and interests, which Mr. Hunt skillfully weaves into lesson plans, creating deeper relevance and engagement. By allowing even the shyest students to contribute their thoughts anonymously through Kahoot!, he fosters an environment of collaboration and confidence, ensuring every voice is heard and valued.

“Talking with children helps you discover their unique personalities and interests, like wanting to be a scientist. As a teacher, you can use these interests in your lessons. For example, if a child shares their love for science while playing Kahoot! in class, you can take that opportunity to explain why it’s important to do scientific experiments correctly. By building strong relationships and showing their ideas on the screen, you create an interactive space that grabs their attention and enhances their learning. This method makes lessons more exciting and helps them connect better with the material.”

In essence, Simon Hunt’s integration of Kahoot! in his classroom enhances student engagement and cultivates meaningful connections between teacher and students. He encourages critical thinking and creates an inclusive learning environment where students are inspired to learn, share, and thrive. Through his imaginative use of Kahoot!’s features, Mr. Hunt has transformed his classroom into a vibrant space full of excitement and success.
