While schools continue to grow their technology ecosystems, more educators, parents, school boards, and policymakers are questioning the value of passive screentime for students. As a former educator, I share these concerns and believe a mindset shift is essential. To earn its place in the classroom, education technology must show that it delivers real learning impact, backed by research and aligned with rigorous standards.
The 2026 EdTech Evidence Report from Instructure answers this key question: “Which technology belongs in classrooms, for what purpose, and with what evidence of positive impact?” Based on a review of 150 digital tools commonly used in K–12 schools, the report can help school districts and states make informed decisions about classroom technologies, ensuring they are both safe and effective.

The power of purpose-built edtech
In this report, one key distinction is between purpose-built edtech (technologies designed for educational settings) and consumer technology (tools that may be used in schools, but weren’t designed for it). The report lists Kahoot! as an example of a purpose-built edtech product.
Why does this matter? It’s not just about features. According to the report, purpose-built edtech is much more likely to be backed by research and meet an Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) evidence level. Alignment with other important quality standards, including data privacy compliance, accessibility, usability, and interoperability is also significantly more common in purpose-built edtech. As school districts begin vetting digital tools more closely, these standards of research, quality, and safety will be critically important to ensuring that classroom technology drives student learning outcomes.
