Enhancing Nutrition Education at the University of Illinois through game-based learning with Kahoot! and AI

At the University of Illinois, which boasts over 40,000 undergraduate and 20,000 graduate students, Professor Toni Marie stands out for her innovative teaching of nutrition and food processing for more than 20 years.

Each semester, her classes attract over 1,000 students. This success showcases her remarkable adaptability and commitment to meeting her students’ needs, whether through live instruction or hybrid formats. Her current use of Kahoot! began when her students recommended the platform to enhance their learning experience with gamification.

“We wanted to gamify the instruction in the classroom. The idea was that the students would  come in prepared to test their knowledge in a kahoot, and then the person at the top of the leaderboard—or the top few—could earn extra credit.”

Toni’s teaching method is profoundly student-centered. When her students expressed a desire to use Kahoot! for instruction, she quickly embraced the idea. Eager to engage with the material in a fun and interactive manner, her students ignited her passion to incorporate the platform into her lessons. “The students were hooked on how much information we could cover in such a short period of time,” she recalls, highlighting how Kahoot! is transforming learning into an enjoyable experience that helps their students retain the content they learn during the lecture.

Taking higher education instruction to the next level with AI and Kahoot!

Toni considers herself as an early adopter of technology. She uses AI for her instruction in ways that are helping her not only save time for preparing her lectures, but also to get a fresh perspective on things, adding touches of creativity by using AI features available in the Kahoot! platform.

One of Toni’s favorite features is the AI PDF-to-kahoot generator, which allows her to quickly create kahoots by simply dragging and dropping her lecture materials into the platform. The AI PDF-to-kahoot generator helps her to streamline her lesson preparation, allowing her to focus on what matters most.

Moreover, the Kahoot! question generator powered by AI has opened new avenues for engaging her students. The diverse question formats generated by the AI allow Toni to think outside the box and see the opportunities she has to ask questions and engage with her students.

“I feel that I might have only asked a multiple-choice question, but it suggested multiple-select or true/false questions in unique ways that I found refreshing.”

Toni Marie’s adoption of Kahoot! and its AI features exemplifies the transformative power of game-based learning and technology in education. Kahoot! has not only enabled her to create a more engaging and interactive learning environment, but it has also freed her time for impactful lesson delivery. Through creativity, adaptability, and the use of groundbreaking tools, Toni continues to inspire and elevate nutrition education at the University of Illinois.
