Learn about current events and the power of inventions with PBS NewsHour EXTRA’s new kahoots on Kahoot! Academy

Discover the latest news and innovations shaping our world in these two new kahoot series from PBS NewsHour EXTRA and Kahoot! Academy

Learners and educators are pros at being curious, creative and passionate about making a difference—three key qualities for any inventor or engaged community member! As the world steps into a future with both challenges and amazing possibilities, we want to empower all learners to unlock their potential and dream big to build a better tomorrow.

To help inspire educators and students to ask questions, think outside the box and get involved in their communities, PBS NewsHour EXTRA is bringing two new series of kahoots to Kahoot! Academy.

The first series, “News Roundup,” will feature a brand-new kahoot every two weeks. These learning games will challenge students to test their knowledge of the latest US news, and why it matters. Learners will be able to explore important current events in politics, society, COVID-19 and more. For students, these games can help make learning about current events feel more accessible and engaging, which is key to building a foundation for active civic participation—from learners to leaders!

In the second series, “Power of Invention,” the kahoots invite learners to explore breakthrough modern inventions and the creative people who took them from idea to reality. Users can discover ingenious recent innovations across multiple fields, including sports medicine, astronomy and health. Learners will discover new ways to treat athletic injuries more effectively and find out how inventions have allowed humanity to traverse the stars. Users can also learn about important advancements in health like vaccines and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), developed to save lives during the coronavirus pandemic.

We will also be rolling out additional kahoots in this series in the future, so stay tuned for even more exciting learning content!

Available to play for free on Kahoot! Academy, these kahoots can be played anywhere—in a physical or virtual classroom, independently at home or even as a challenge users can complete at their own pace.

PBS NewsHour EXTRA is dedicated to providing educational resources for teachers and students from grade 6 to 12, including lesson plans, education stories and classroom resources to teach students about news and media literacy. Last November, Kahoot! teamed up with PBS NewsHour EXTRA to engage students in learning about Election 2020.

“At Kahoot!, curiosity, playfulness and inclusivity are our core values, and we know these values are shared by the civic leaders and inventors who are making the world a better place,” said Craig Narveson, Director of Strategic Partnerships at Kahoot!. “Teaming up again with PBS NewsHour EXTRA to shine a light on important news and innovations is an awesome opportunity to inspire learners to be the leaders and problem solvers of tomorrow.”

“A real strength of Kahoot! is that it’s one more way – a creative, fun way – for teachers to engage their students with the material,” said Victoria Pasquantonio, Education Producer and head of PBS NewsHour EXTRA. “When students’ curiosity is piqued, their understanding of the issue and how it affects their community deepens.

These kahoots are available to play now on Kahoot! Academy, a knowledge platform and online community, which allows educators and publishers to share and access content that supports engaging and meaningful learning experiences for learners of all ages, worldwide. All Kahoot! Academy content is available for all Kahoot! users, both through the website and on the mobile app.
