Story

Located in the heart of Copenhagen in Denmark, Tivoli Gardens is one of the world’s oldest amusement parks, enchanting visitors since it opened in 1843. Known for its beautiful gardens and thrilling rides, Tivoli Gardens offers guests a blend of charm and modern entertainment. Among Tivoli’s main attractions are the Friday Rock concerts, which were introduced over 27 years ago. The concerts occur every summer between April and September, transforming the park into a lively music festival. Friday Rock concerts have featured performances by popular artists including  50 Cent, Diana Ross, Snoop Dogg, Deep Purple, and many more.

Tivoli’s main task: Get music fans and attendees into the park earlier and set them in the right mood before the concert

Despite the excitement surrounding the Friday rock concerts, Tivoli Gardens had the task of managing the influx of thousands of eager fans who would gather at the park just an hour before the concerts began, all in a short amount of time. To ensure a better access experience for visitors, Tivoli Gardens added various activities to the agenda to offer visitors and music fans earlier access to the amusement park. These activities included opening concerts, stand-up shows, and the use of Kahoot! to support engagement and entertainment in the park.

“We wanted people to come earlier to the park and prepare them for the concert experience. Usually, the concerts start at 10:00 PM, but before introducing Kahoot! people arrived at 9:00 PM, so it was difficult for us to get thousands of guests inside the park within one hour. Therefore, we introduced more activities including three Kahoot! contests which we play on the main stage to keep the crowd engaged and energized while they wait for the main act.”

The kahoots at Friday Rock concerts are tailored to the artists performing each night, allowing attendees to learn more about their favorite musicians. This engaging activity has become a highlight for many concert-goers, deepening their connection to the artists and enhancing their enjoyment.

Building the atmosphere and making visitors part of something bigger!

Tivoli Gardens successfully increased early attendance at Friday Rock by incorporating Kahoot! into the event agenda. This strategic decision resulted in a more evenly spread out flow of attendees, reducing congestion and improving the overall experience.

At Friday Rock, Tivoli Gardens hosts three different kahoots with three winners each. Becoming a Kahoot! winner entails prizes ranging from vouchers for food and drinks to free tickets to visit the amusement park and Bluetooth speakers for music lovers.

People who arrive early to Friday Rock can secure prime spots for the concerts and compete in all three kahoots, increasing their chances of becoming prize winners. These kahoots not only keep the crowd engaged but also promote a sense of community among attendees, making the wait more enjoyable and lively.

Playing Kahoot! at Tivoli Gardens

“People at the park are playing Kahoot! on the phones, and others are just following, but everybody is engaged, even those not playing. Kahoot! creates a fun atmosphere on the stage, and that is important for us. We don’t want people to be bored while waiting for the concert, and Kahoot! helps us to keep thousands of people engaged.”

Introducing guests to other available park experiences with Kahoot!

Tivoli Gardens also uses Kahoot! as a tool to communicate with all attendees of the Friday Rock concerts. The platform’s capabilities help to inform people about other areas they can discover in the park. It also provides practical information they need to know during their visit, such as the location of attractions, eating areas, bars, toilets, smoking areas, and more.

“We use Kahoot! as a communication tool to provide the best experience at the park. Using Kahoot! to share practical information is an engaging way to deliver messages without turning them into a commercial for Tivoli Gardens. We want to explore using Kahoot! even more for this purpose. For instance, we can use the platform to effectively communicate messages to the audience about behaviors to avoid during concerts. This is a fun and interactive way to convey these important messages.”

Using Kahoot! as a communication tool has helped Tivoli Gardens in different ways. Firstly, it has increased people’s time at various park areas, such as attractions, restaurants, and bars. According to Kasper, the flow at the bars and the crowd near the stage are more organized and longer, improving the atmosphere at the park significantly.

Secondly, it has improved the flow of people in the park by guiding visitors to their desired locations. Tivoli Gardens achieves this by incorporating different question types into their kahoots, such as Multiple-Select, True-or-False, Slider, and Pin-Answer.

“We try to use different types of questions, and particularly Slider and Pin Answer have been great add-ons. This is the first year we have tried these two question types; our audience loves them. People love the Slider, and I can see that when it comes up, everyone is looking at each other’s phones to see how they answered. It makes it a good experience because everyone talks with each other.”

Mads Bakkensen Johansen, Project Coordinator in Entertainment in the Garden

With Kahoot!, Tivoli Gardens is fulfilling their goal of engaging and entertaining people while waiting for the Friday Rock concert, improving the overall experience of the visitors. Kahoot! has also become an important part of Tivoli’s agenda to transform the atmosphere from an amusement park into a concert venue, making it magical for visitors.
