About Jean-Baptiste Salvat: For more than 15 years, Jean-Baptiste has been the Director of the CGR cinema in Blagnac located in the city of Toulouse, France. He loves event planning at the cinema and providing his audience with unique experiences that they will remember forever.

For the first time ever the four major cinema franchises in the city of Toulouse, located in the south of France, joined forces to deliver a one-of-a-kind event for the delight of all Harry Potter fans during a weekend-long movie marathon which included a real-time interactive competition powered by Kahoot!.

The event, named “The Cup of 4 Cinemas,” featured CINEMA KINEPOLIS FENOUILLET (Hufflepuff), CINEMA PATHE LABEGE (Gryffindor), CINEMA VEO MURET (Ravenclaw), and CINEMA CGR BLAGNAC (Slytherin), each representing one of the iconic Hogwarts houses from the franchise. The goal? To see which house would come out on top through a series of Harry Potter-themed Kahoot! quizzes, uniting fans across the city in a friendly competition.

Friendly competition

The four cinemas have always been competitors and each cinema does their own activities and events  to bring people into their theaters. However, the concept of “The Cup of 4 Cinemas” became an idea to foster collaboration among the cinema brands for the good of the movie industry.

“We are four competing brands that battle a bit all year to bring people into our theaters. However, as theater directors we are quite friendly outside of that. We see each other often, we get along very well, and all four of us had been saying for years that it would be nice if one day we could come together for an event, pool our efforts together so that it resonates with cinema lovers.”

Eventually, all directors came up with the idea of creating something like the “Four Cinemas Cup” where the four cinemas would compete over a night or a weekend and Kahoot! became the platform of choice from Jean Baptiste to bring together one of the strongest fan communities existing today.

An enchanted collaboration for an iconic wizarding world

The Harry Potter series has always fostered a sense of community, and “The Cup of 4 Cinemas” brought that spirit to life in an innovative way. Fans didn’t just watch their favorite movies; they became active participants in the experience during The Cup of 4 Cinemas.

Before each film screening, a live Kahoot! was hosted in real-time across all the four cinemas uniting them through the support of Microsoft Teams, testing the audience’s knowledge of the wizarding world. All attendees to the cinema were participants and answered trivia questions spanning the books, films, and lore, all in real-time with players across the other cinemas.

“We wanted to create a dynamic experience together for our audiences and the people of Toulouse so they could benefit from it. The Kahoot! Interaction has been very well received and each game adds a lot of excitement to any theater. This is very promising for us and opens up more opportunities for replciating similar events with different franchises”

The competition between each Hogwarts house was fierce, as both individual winners for each quiz and a final house winner were crowned. This added a whole new dimension to the movie-watching experience—turning passive viewers into engaged competitors using Kahoot!.

At the end of the weekend, the house that accumulated the most points across all quizzes won “The Cup of 4 Cinemas.” Fans from each cinema had the chance to earn points for their house, making every quiz crucial in determining the ultimate winner.

Engaging audiences through engaging competition

CGR Cinemas’ “The Cup of 4 Cinemas” initiative went beyond a mutual appreciation for Harry Potter. It aimed to introduce an innovative approach to uniting movie enthusiasts. This campaign marked the inaugural collaboration among the four cinemas, demonstrating the impact of working together in a competitive entertainment industry.

“Normally, when you go to the cinema, you just sit, and watch, and that’s it. But this time, we participated, and it was intense. We had questions on the Kahoot! that were sometimes easy, and everyone was super proud, but then we had some really difficult questions. Plus, there was that moment at the beginning of the Kahoot! when we were all waiting to see our name appear on the screen, that was very exciting too.”

The introduction of Kahoot! made this collaboration and competition possible. Its versatility allowed for real-time interaction between different cinema locations, offering all participants a seamless and dynamic experience. Fans across the city, regardless of their cinema, were able to connect through the shared thrill of the quizzes. Each cinema hosted its own participants, yet everyone was engaged in the same live game, seeing their scores and competition unfold in real time.

Not only did individual players have the chance to win prizes for scoring the highest points in their local quizzes, but the house that earned the most points over the weekend was awarded the ultimate title of “Champion of the Cup of 4 Cinemas.” This format kept fans on the edge of their seats, as every Kahoot! round contributed to the final outcome.
