Helping students improve their grades during their mid-term exams while ensuring that learning sticks with them

Before incorporating Kahoot! into her lectures, professor and medical faculty member Chantelle Hall, faced the challenge of breaking the monotony in her classroom. Her goal was to ensure that students could understand complex concepts related to respiratory diseases and effectively respond to real-life emergencies.

“When I first started teaching lectures, I didn’t use Kahoot, and I found that I would have to repeat a lot of information for them to get it”.

Breaking monotony in the classroom

Kahoot! has not only broken the monotony in the classroom but also served as a study guide, allowing students to continue testing their knowledge asynchronously.

By using Kahoot! in her classroom, Professor Chantelle creates an engaging learning experience for her students during in-person instruction. Her students enjoy the interactive nature of live kahoots, the excitement of competing in teams, and the opportunity to collaborate. This approach has energized the classroom and resulted in a fully engaged learning environment. Students are now more actively involved in discussions, developing critical thinking skills, and expressing their ideas, which has led to positive conversations.

Moreover, the benefits of this learning method extend beyond the classroom. Professor Chantelle reports that her students are now requesting that she create Kahoots they can play on weekends, allowing them to reinforce their learning even in their free time.

“So now the students are actually requesting Kahoot as a study guide. So I may get a text or email on a Friday night. They know they have a big test on Monday. “Hey, Prof, can you please create a Kahoot?” I’ll create the Kahoot and then I’ll assign it to them and put it into their canvas so they can just do it over and over again as part of their study guide for the tests that are coming next week”.

Putting knowledge into practice

Professor Chantelle reports that the introduction of Kahoot! is providing her students with more points of contact for learning. She notices that her students are able to put into practice what they have learned during the in-classroom kahoots in the respiratory laboratory.

“I’m providing the students with various points of contact for learning. We’ll engage with the patient directly, discuss topics during lectures, and now they have a Kahoot game to apply their knowledge. This gamified approach encourages healthy competition among classmates, which I find both enjoyable and rewarding to observe as they interact”.
