Kahoot!: A platform made by teachers, for teachers

Hear about Kahoot!’s qualified teachers’ favorite features and their recommendations for making the school year successful.

A new school year is a time of excitement, new beginnings, and motivation, but it can also be overwhelming. As a former teacher in a UK secondary school, I know all too well that lesson planning, establishing routines, taking on new classes, and all the other ins and outs of back-to-school can quickly become a never-ending to-do list!

That’s where Kahoot! comes in. It’s so much more than just a learning platform—it’s a community crafted by teachers, for teachers. Here at Kahoot!, many of us have walked the school halls and stood at the front of classrooms as educators, and we understand the unique challenges that come with fostering an engaging learning environment.

I caught up with some of my fellow teachers here at Kahoot! to spotlight their favorite features and how these tools have made a difference in their classrooms—and how they can help you this school year!

“As a former teacher, I found Kahoot!’s groups feature invaluable for team collaboration. I used it extensively with colleagues to streamline lesson planning. Our team created subject-specific groups, making it simple to share plans, gather input, and quickly locate the right kahoot for each lesson. The ability to leave comments and feedback, including post-lesson reflections, directly within groups helped us refine our teaching and address student learning gaps.”

Tyler Shelnutt, Customer Success Renewal Manager, US. 4th-grade and kindergarten teacher.

“Supporting little learners meant that any digital tool used in the classroom needed to be both intuitive and accessible to emergent readers. Adding images as answers helped my students to find success in using Kahoot! independently! I’d be able to assign a kahoot, share the lesson via QR code, and students could learn and practice concepts at their own pace during self-directed time in the classroom. Since being a 1st-grade teacher, the quiz and audio feature has also been launched, making the entire question accessible by way of read-aloud audio! No reading skills, no problem! Kahoot! still maintains that learning can be interactive and engaging, even for the youngest students.”

Hannah Harris, Senior Community Manager, US. 4th grade and 1st grade teacher.

“We played a lot of kahoots in our Biology and AP Biology classroom! I always kept a special stash of prizes to give out to the podium winners and small treats to toss out during the game for students who made their thinking visible to their peers. This was also before all the great Kahoot! game modes like Lost Pyramid and Submarine Squad, so I was often creating new ways of playing in Classic mode that would involve teamwork and expose more students to the thoughts and ideas of their peers. Now the awesome Kahoot! game modes can curate collaborative experiences for us! Kahoot! is so loved by students and easy to use by teachers, and there is endless potential for all educators to bring Kahoot! to life in their classrooms and courses in ways that are meaningful to their students and in keeping with the classroom culture they’ve built together.

If I were still in the classroom, I would absolutely love to use lecture mode with slide sync—especially to enrich a rigorous course like AP Biology. In the past, I was always toggling between our kahoot game and our slide deck, but with both lecture mode and slide sync, I would be able to combine both the kahoot and our learning material into one seamless and engaging experience for all of us.”

Aron Hill, Senior Manager of Customer Success, US. High school Biology and AP Biology teacher.

“For my youngest learners in elementary school, true or false questions are an incredibly effective Kahoot! tool. As a former teacher, I found them usable for almost any topic. I’d often have students contribute their own questions or statements, which I’d then transform into a Kahoot!

While playing, I would read the questions aloud, supporting developing readers. Typically, each child used their own device, fostering individual engagement. However, for a fantastic collaborative experience, we sometimes played as a whole class, where students had to discuss and agree upon the answer as a team. This made it a truly engaging group activity.”

Marna Georgstad, Community and Pedagogical Manager, Norway. 1st to 4th-grade teacher.

“In my primary classroom, I loved using Kahoot! as a tool for community building and fostering collaboration. I would have my students work in pairs to create their own review games before an exam. The great part was that the creation process itself — discussing the main concepts, analyzing key themes, and building the questions — became the most effective learning tool. The games we all played together at the end were just a clever bonus! My students felt so empowered that they would often volunteer to create games for the younger students in kindergarten and first grade, extending that sense of community and leadership beyond our own classroom walls.”

Meira Koponen, Learning Design Manager, Finland. Primary school teacher.

Collaborating with current educators

Although our Kahoot! teachers have taken a step away from the classroom, we still work closely with our Kahoot! Ambassadors, a global community of current educators who inform our platform and keep us up-to-date on education trends and conversations.

  • “Being involved in the early stages with beta testing is awesome. I love helping to develop the evolution of Kahoot! and where the site is going.” Steve Auslander, Elementary STEM Teacher, Indiana, USA.

  • “I love [beta] testing these new game modes. I loved the collaborative element between classes, students, and Ambassadors back to the K!rew.” Zeny Ulloa, Curriculum Specialist, Florida, USA.

  • “Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity to be part of such an amazing team. The Kahoot! team is welcoming and supportive of feedback and learning. I can’t recommend the experience, the team, and Kahoot! enough. It’s inspiring!” Bernadette Smith, Primary Teacher, Brisbane, AU.

It’s important to everyone here at Kahoot! that educators, both former and current, continue to inform the platform. From developing Accuracy mode based on your feedback for precision over speed to visiting schools and seeing how Kahoot! impacts teachers and students firsthand—everything we do is with educators in mind.

The stories and successes shared by educators inspire us to keep innovating, ensuring that Kahoot! remains a valuable tool for classrooms everywhere. By actively listening to and collaborating with teachers, we aim to create learning experiences that are engaging, inclusive, and tailored to real educational needs.
