About our Kahoot! hero

John Manousos has been with Johnson & Johnson for over 21 years, working for over 12 years in sales and later in HR. He is a Learning Experience Excellence (LEx) team member, delivering learning programs to over 4,500 learners from six business units. Johnson & Johnson is an American multinational pharmaceutical and medical technologies corporation.

Story

Last year, Johnson & Johnson introduced Kahoot! as its new digital tool to improve the learning experience of more than 4,500 learners across the organization. Since then, the Learning Experience Excellence (LEx) team at Johnson & Johnson has been using Kahoot! to make incremental changes in the learning process of their L&D partners, which is helping them achieve their business goals.

For Johnson & Johnson, Kahoot! is a tool that improves the training experience for new hires in pharma sales and helps them identify learning gaps among their partners and sales representatives. These training sessions often include information on some of their most popular medicines and market competition data. The team also uses Kahoot!’s reports to determine which questions are challenging for learners. This helps them improve the training sessions by modifying the question’s formulation or removing it from the training altogether.

With features in Kahoot! such as the player identifier, the LEx team can quickly identify which participants are struggling with a concept or question, and they can provide immediate assistance to reinforce learning.

In addition, the team has boosted friendly competition between their sales departments by implementing engaging and enjoyable learning activities during their national sales meeting, which is attended by hundreds of people. To achieve this, the LEx team utilizes Kahoot! game modes with their sales teams, providing all participants with a unique social learning experience.

“The Kahoot! platform offers the flexibility to group people and compete against other groups. We do this by using Kahoot! team mode and we group them based on their region or role. You can customize the grouping based on what works best for your business. The stakes are only for bragging rights, but the participants get excited and energetic. Kahoot! creates real fun energy and atmosphere in the room.”

The game-based learning approach of Kahoot! has allowed Johnson & Johnson to implement creative ways of engaging with their new hires. John recalls that one of the first Kahoot! HR users at Johnson & Johnson implemented a new icebreaker activity to enhance engagement, increase cultural integration with the company, and reduce the anxiety of newly hired staff.

“During the live classroom training, we would show a questionnaire to all new hires,” John continued. “The questionnaire consists of questions about their preferences. For instance, they were asked to name their favorite color from a list of options. We used Kahoot! to conduct the questionnaire, which is an excellent icebreaker. The new hires get involved in the process, which helped them get to know each other better.”

Kahoot! chosen by popularity and demand!

The Learning Experience Excellence team (LEx) at Johnson & Johnson chose Kahoot! after analyzing the results of a survey they conducted with their learning and development (L&D) partners. The survey asked which digital tools they would like to have in their toolbox to accomplish their goals, and the survey results showed that Kahoot! was the top popular choice across the teams.

John recalls that the survey results also indicated that the digital tools that Johnson & Johnson’s L&D partners were using before introducing Kahoot! were often difficult and time-consuming for participants to learn how to use. In addition, these tools did not provide the learners and LEx team with insightful analytics and the reporting they needed to optimize their training.

“One of the common challenges we saw as a result of the survey was that some of the existing tools we were using for L&D became overly familiar. This made our learners perceive that learning was a little boring, which is not great when you want to generate engagement. Therefore, we wanted something new, cost-conscious, and easy to learn for us and our learning and development partners.”

Tailored Kahoot! roll-out experience to maximize learning

The roll-out of the Kahoot! licenses within the Johnson and Johnson L&D partners was a thoughtfully planned collaborative process with Kahoot!. John and his team wanted to make sure that the roll-out of Kahoot! could provide value and return on investment for the time their L&D partners would spend on mastering a new platform.

“We started with a demo call, during which we introduced Kahoot! to our L&D partners. During this demo session, the CS team at Kahoot! showed the functionality of the features, game modes, and collaborative and reporting capabilities of the platform. Everybody played the game, and that got them very excited. Then, after that call, we shared how to get started with Kahoot! and where they can get resources to learn more about what they can do with the platform.”

The most important outcome during the roll-out process of Kahoot! at Johnson & Johnson was that it enabled the L&D partners to be more creative, agile, and self-sufficient in creating their training sessions. To achieve this, the LEx team took the learning process of Kahoot! to the next level by creating a landing page that included all the information and resources the L&D partners needed to familiarize themselves with the platform. This landing page included training sessions that helped them reinforce their learning. Ever since, John and his team have organized a yearly review with their L&D partners, introducing newcomers to Kahoot! and showing new features or updates on the platform and how they can benefit from them.
