Teacher Takeover: Once a player, now a host

From student-teacher, to teaching students, Kahoot! Ambassador Elisabeth L. shares how she’s flipped her classroom with Kahoot! tools.

As a university student in 2018, Elisabeth was first introduced to Kahoot! during a lecture. What started as a fun way to engage with course content quickly became one of my favorite educational tools. It turned assessments into a game, fostered friendly competition, and made learning feel like an interactive experience rather than a one-way lecture. At the time, Elisabeth had no idea that Kahoot! would later play a crucial role in her own teaching career.

Fast forward to today, Elisabeth now works as a STEAM coordinator for her school, previously supporting both general education classrooms and ENL students in Queens, NY, working as an educator for the Department of Education in New York City Public Schools. As an educator, Elisabeth strives to create an engaging and inclusive learning environment, and Kahoot! has been an integral part of that mission. Whether reviewing key concepts, assessing student understanding, or reinforcing language skills, Kahoot! consistently proves to be a reliable tool that captivates her students’ attention while building their confidence in the learning process.

One of the standout features that Elisabeth’s students love is the Kahoot! Podium. It not only gamifies the learning experience, but also instills a sense of accomplishment in Elisabeth’s students. Seeing their names on the leaderboard boosts their confidence and motivates them to actively participate, turning even the most hesitant learners into enthusiastic contributors. This positive reinforcement is especially impactful her my TESOL classroom, where language learners often struggle with self-assurance. Kahoot! helps break down barriers and creates an environment where students feel encouraged to try, even if they don’t always get the answer right.

Kahoot! has been a staple in Elisabeth’s teaching toolkit, consistently ranking among her shortlist of top five edtech tools. Its adaptability across subjects and age groups makes it an invaluable asset for educators at all levels. But what’s even more exciting is Elisabeth’s own journey with Kahoot! has come full circle. Recently, she had the opportunity to return to her alma mater and share experiences with future educators. As a guest speaker, Elisabeth introduced collegiate-level students to the power of educational technology, demonstrating how Kahoot! can diversify curriculum and create interactive learning experiences.

This experience reaffirmed Elisabeth’s belief that Kahoot! is more than just a game—it’s a transformative tool that enhances both teaching and learning. For educators looking to bring energy and engagement into their classrooms, Kahoot! offers endless possibilities. From quick formative assessments to deep discussions and collaborative challenges, it’s a platform that continues to evolve to meet the needs of teachers and students alike.

    Getting started on Kahoot!

If you’re an educator looking to revitalize your teaching approach, why not give Kahoot! a try? Start by creating your own Kahoot! quizzes and activities, tailored to your students’ needs. Explore the vast library of ready-to-use content or take advantage of features like Podium to celebrate student achievements. Elisabeth’s top three #KahootTips to get started include:

    • Think about what you want your students to accomplish! What’s the big goal for your students? Whether you’re reinforcing topics, reviewing, or introducing a new topic, really think about what you want your kids to get from the Kahoot experience!
    • Make sure the kids know they should read the questions and answers carefully! The kids LOVE kahoot and get excited about the different games but they get so caught up in the game that they forget to read things carefully and take their time. I remind them that the more questions you do well on, the better it will be for the game itself. Learning should be fun! But don’t forget about the learning itself.
    • Remind the kids that it’s not about first, second or third place. My kids always ask, “Who won?” or “Who came in first?”. I am working on reframing their way of thinking.  So whether they’re in robot run or collecting treasure, celebrate the smaller wins too! Like getting those tricky questions right or helping out someone who’s stuck–the bigger prize is that everyone is working towards something and we can see it with Kahootopia.
